Musical musings…

Musical musings…

I’ve lost track of how many times I listened to a song from the past with my neck-loop, convinced I was listening to a completely different song. The songs sound nothing like I remember. I wonder how much of the sound difference is attributed to analog vs. digital hearing aid.

Music to me either sounds good, or meh. I don’t FEEL the corresponding emotions music attempts to convey. I can’t remember the last time I felt goosebumps from listening to music. I hear the highs and lows of a musical composition / song, but without accompanying video / picture(s), there is no context for me to grasp its meaning.

Taylor Swift re-recorded Fearless. Does that mean Taylor sings in a different key? Changed the lyrics? How much change is required to avoid plagiarizing the master recording?

David Gilmour’s Comfortably Numb solo is consistently ranked the best solo of all time. Why? Who decides?

Light My Fire / Freebird / Comfortably Numb solos – how does the band know when to resume the song / vocals? Muscle Memory? Timer?

Pink Floyd & Brit Floyd sound the same to me. Can YOU tell the difference between the two bands? If so, HOW?

The Sound(s) of Silence

The Sound(s) of Silence

The first time I listened to The Sound Of Silence in high school, it was, as always, a less than ideal environment: noisy air conditioner, dogs barking, people talking, etc. I did not have a neck-loop in those days. Even with the title referencing “Sound” and “Silence”, it just didn’t captivate me back then.

You have to remember, there was no internet in the 80’s and 90’s. You had your fingers crossed the lyrics are printed in the CD jacket. IF you are really lucky, there are commas, periods, paragraphs, song breaks, and liner notes to guide you. Otherwise, you got a continuous string of lyrics, from the first song to the last song, which didn’t help much, at all.

Rarely have I read a song’s lyrics and felt a connection. Simon & Garfunkel’s The Sound Of Silence, is one of those rare times.

Is The Sound Of Silence the Deaf community mantra?
